Remembering Tina Downey

The writing community recently lost a wonderful friend, writer, and blogger, Tina Downey. I didn't know Tina as well as many, but I did get the chance to know her better through to the Tree of Life collaboration. Her comments in the feed of our little facebook group were always funny, and bright, and positive, despite her struggles with health issues. The virtual tree house will never be the same.

Her avatar was a sunflower and it's a wonderful symbol to remember her by. So today, to honor Tina's memory, many bloggers are gathering/planting sunflowers to brighten up the internet in the same way Tina brightened the world around her.

Unfortunately, sunflowers were difficult for me to find and plant this late in the season where I live. Therefore, I planted these perennial marguerite daisies instead. They remind me of miniature sunflowers--and Tina.

Rest in peace, Tina.

  1. It really amazes me how many people were able to plant and grow beautiful yellow flowers so quickly. It's the end of winter here. beautiful tribute to Tina.

  2. Hi Elise ... I bought my sunflowers, as it's that time of year, but I hope the seeds will get collected and then can be spread around ... I bought some for the Nursing Centre and I hope we can spread some seeds up there for next year ...

Love the use of marguerite daisies .. they have that central swirl ... lovely thoughts for Tina .. cheers Hilary

  3. Aloha,

I nearly ended up with one of those daisy things, too... but the lady at Lowes found me one sunflower in the back of the last shelf...

My post goes up in 47 mins... and be careful... your eyes may bleed.. but your sides will be stitched :)

  4. Close enough, Elise!
So cool you got to know her through those projects. That was Tina - involved in so many things because she loved people.

  13. Agree with Melissa. I went with plastic, too. But at least, I'm telling myself, this one won't wither for a long time.

    Those daisies look so lovely.

  14. There were lots of sunflowers in pictures of the downed plane over the Ukraine. I know that sounds so morbid, but I couldn't help noticing all of them. I love sunflowers. I'm so sorry for your loss. Tina must have been a wonderful person to have as a friend (I didn't know her).

  21. Daisies? Smart move.
I suffer from 'green-finger-impairment' and I didn't have enough time to get my hands on a sunflower, so I went to plan B...
    It's the thought that counts.

  22. What's interesting, Elise, is that I noticed we've suddenly had some of those daisies growing in the backyard. They do look a lot like sunflowers, and I thought it was a nice coincidence that they've suddenly sprouted around this time. Thank you for identifying them - I had no idea what they're called. These daisies and sunflowers will forever keep Tina's beautiful, bright spirit with us. Very nice tribute. Thank you.

  23. The flowers are beautiful. The green on my thumb isn't exactly bright either. I'm just lucky enough to have them grow naturally (that's basically the only thing that grows with me.) Lovely words!

  24. They do look like mini sunflowers! Tina would totally love them. I hope all the sunflowers and love we're sending has her smiling up in heaven. I'm sure she is. She'll be missed for sure.
