IWSG: Writing and Trying to Run a B&B

The first Wednesday of every month is the Insecure Writer’s Support Group bloghop. It's a day where writers/bloggers reach out and post their fears and doubts about their writing, but also share their triumphs, no matter how big or small.

My name is Elise Fallson, and it’s been a whole month since I’ve blogged. *hangs head in shame*

Last month was supposed to be my come-back month, but instead, it’s been one of the worst for me writing wise. In fact, it’s been so bad, I’ve put up my laptop to go old school… pen and paper.

Anyway, part of the problem is that we’ve started a small B&B activity that occupies most of my time. And though it’s only going to run from April to September, my writing time has been slashed. And I’m so tired. Like all the time. But one of the positive points about running a B&B has been meeting so many different people. Every couple that stay at our B&B is different and each has had a slightly different way of doing things. It’s been an interesting study in human behaviour, as well as in the art of small talk and chitchat. For a writer and introvert, this is pretty valuable stuff.

I know this first year is going to be the most difficult. But, I’m hoping with practice, and a new washing machine (mine broke last week and I had to do laundry at my Mom’s for a week---ffffuuuuuuukkkk), things will get easier. But working in the service industry, no matter how small, is stressful. I could write on and on about that, but you know…. time…..

I hope to  write more about the people I meet. I’ve already met some pretty interesting characters, luckily, they’ve all been lovely people--so far.

Well, that's it for me, hope you all are doing well and finding the time you need to write. And as always, take care and catch up with you soon... I hope! :)

  1. It seems May was a lousy month for a lot of us. Sigh. Here's hoping to better months ahead! Good luck with the new endeavor!

  2. Wow, that's quite an undertaking! Sorry it has derailed your writing. Use it as research time and take note of all the odd, I mean unique, people.

  3. What an extraordinary school to learn human behavior for your later writing. I owned my own book store for 12 years and know how ... unique some customers can be! Ideas will be gestating in your unconscious as you scale this new mountain. I wish you all kinds of success. Hang in there. Always your friend, Roland

  4. I can't imagine the amount of work involved in a B&B. It does sound exciting though except for the extra laundry part. I'm sure your writing will bounce back in September.

  5. Hi Elise - yes I can imagine the sort of work you're having to do .. having worked in a local hotel on all sides. Good luck with it - but you'll pick up loads of interesting information ... remember a tape recorder, or the thing where your phone/ipad converts your talk to text ... could be useful for odd notes.

It is only six months as you say .. but will ease your situation somewhat ... good luck and take those benefits and those character traits etc ... hope it's full for you ... cheers Hilary

  6. I've seen enough restaurant shows to know that is a ton of work. Focus on the B&B right now and start taking notes for writing in the fall.

  7. How cool! I wondered what it would be like to run a B&B... considered it once or twice. It WOULD be a great way to people-watch. :)

Good to *see* you again. Missed you.

  8. That's huge and I can see why you're time is spent elsewhere. But, oh yes, all the characters you'll get to meet. I hope it's a great success.

  9. A B&B sounds like fun, but I can see how it would be a time suck. Sorry you haven't gotten much writing done :(

  10. A B&B could be a great set up for a book with all the folks you meet

  11. A B&B sounds like a lot of hard work! Too bad about the writing, though. How I wish there was more time!

  12. Wow. I can't imagine hosting a B&B at my house. I'm pretty sure my crazy family would drive guests out. Hope it goes well for you!

  13. I love B&B's!!! I'm sure you'll have loads of material for writing after the season!!! Good Luck!

  14. That is something definitely not for writers I think. I have stayed in B & B's and there is no way you would have time to write. However, what wonderful material for a book. You can run a continuous series of novels about running a B & B. All the best Elise. I hope it all works for you. What do you serve for breakfast?

  15. I'm sure you get a lot of inspiration from your guests! Maybe you could think of this as fueling up time, before that great story about everything you've been living comes out.

  16. I've stayed at a B & B before with my husband, and enjoyed my time mingling with everyone there during the breakfasts and afternoon teas.

I'm sure you'll get lots of story ideas from running a B & B. It seems like a number of fictional murder mysteries happen at B & Bs, and thankfully for you, I don't hear about that happening in real life! =)

  17. You need to keep a journal/notebook of all the interesting, and maybe not so interesting, things you experience in your new venture. Don't let those nuggets slip away.

  18. Nice to make your acquaintance, Elise Fallson. Of course, I never noticed you've been absent from blogging for a month or so. LOL?

You're running a B & B? What's that Blog and Breakfast? Kidding and yes think of all the interesting , weird and zany folks you might meet. I'll book a room!

Good luck with your guest house endeavour, Elise.

    Gary :) .

  19. Cheer up, Elise! You'll get some free time to blog and write again, someday. I bet running a B&B is pretty stressful, though, but interesting, as you say. Kind of cool.

  20. Hi, Elise...

I see you're still BUSY... I haven't dropped by in AGES, but I'm glad I had the chance today...

What fun... running a B&B is something I have planned for the future. I LOVE people and meeting all kinds from all over the world will be fascinating for sure... Hope it's a WONDERFUL experience for you.

As for you writing, jot down the your guests... a quick few sentences on each. That will keep your writing skills sharp while you are too busy to write.

  21. I think you can excuse yourself for feeling stressed! The first month at any new endeavor is a stressful one -- and oh, wow, running a B&B has got to be a lot of work. Eventually, you'll get the hang of it, the stress will diminish, and the writing will return.

I can't write at all when I'm stressed.

  22. A Bed & Breakfast in France sounds very lucrative and exciting. I can't wait to hear tales from all the people you've rented to. Are you using the app AirBNB?

  23. This is just the beginning of a life enriching experience. Book knowledge is one thing but practical life knowledge now theres a best seller.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Imagine all the potential stories those B&B guests can provide...?
You should jot down the things they say and turn your working experience into a story. A B&B situation can provide fodder for a mystery/suspense story... or adventure... it could go in any direction.
    Keep a notebook handy!!

  25. I'm guessing you'd want to shoot me if I said running a B&B seemed like fun, so I won't. But it does sound interesting!!! ;-) Hope you're soon able to strike a balance and get adequate rest!

  26. I know I'm late to the party, again, but wow! a B&B! That must be exciting but so much work. Hope it's all going well for you, and hope the washer is fixed.

  28. My applause is for you and certainly all the work you are doing now until the fall. Even though you aren't able to write, I think the people experience will be beneficial for you in the long-term. I am sure you are/will be meeting some interesting and quirky people--what a fantastic activity to enhance your character development abilities in the future.

    Enjoy your week Elise.
