I Want One: The Robotic Spider Dress

This is the Robotic Spider Dress that's been popping up around the internet. It's pretty interesting despite the fact that spiders have eight legs, not six. *shakes head*

if you want to Pin it! (Haha, did you see what I did there? :P)

Anyway, from what I've read, the dress was designed by fashiontech designer Anouk Wipprecht in collaboration with software engineer Daniel Schatzmar. The "legs" are mounted on the shoulder pads of the dress and have sensors that make the legs respond to movement around it. So for example, if someone gets too close, the legs will activate. Check out the video if you have time to see the dress in "action."

So, is the video creepy? Yes.
Would I wear this dress? Yes. For Halloween or at my birthday party. :D

Would I look ridiculous in this dress. Yes. But, I'm no stranger to ridiculous. In fact, I've already worn an insect costume dress and I did it years ago. And let me tell you I was the creepiest Halloween cockroach you ever saw. Do I have pictures to prove it? I sure do. And if you want to see them, you'll have to check back tomorrow! (;

    1. Yeah, I've heard that argument...good thing I still have both my legs that don't look ANYTHING like the ones on my shoulder...wait, what? :P

  3. I wonder how heavy that thing is on the shoulders? And yep, my first thought was 'I'd probably poke somebody's eye out.'

  4. Hi Elise ... extraordinary vision - crazy to have eight legs and not six ... but would be fun to wear ... but not in an elevator of any sort probably ...

    Cheers - fun to see the craziness of mechanical design ... Hilary

    1. It would be fun to wear out in public just to see what kind of reaction you'd get from others. (:

  6. Yea, I'd definitely end up hurting someone.

  7. Does it help you climb walls? Will it keep flies away? Erk! It doesn't mean you kill the male you're with after the date is over!? Terrible, terrible dress! Don't even look at it!

  8. Bugger - scrub my previous comment. It's not a spider dress, as spiders have eight legs and two palps. Insects have six legs, so it's a bug dress... but only if you wish to be picky.

    Plus the model looks less than enthusiastic when those legs are re-positioning.

    1. I think the model wishes it was a tarantula dress with 8 fuzzy legs that flings poisoned darts at people who get too close...or maybe that's just me. (;

  10. Yeah, other than Halloween, when would you wear it? And with six legs, it's more like a beetle dress.

  11. Great... I'm co-hosting a re-introduce myself blogfest with the lady who wore the insect dress... (says he who wears a clown's outfit and paints his face with the Irish flag on St. Paddy's Day...)

    PS... nice new "do" on the blog :)

  13. The spider has six legs because the person wearing it has two, right?

    1. No, it has six legs because the average person can't tell the difference between an insect and an arachnid. I think they simply called it that because it looks more spider-like and sounds better than 'bug dress', Plus, I bet the logistics of having four movable legs on each shoulder may have been too difficult to realize.

  20. If we ever end up at the same writer's conference, you're making you a dress like this. I don't care if we have to use pipe cleaners and duct tape! LOL
