REVIVAL blog tour, PICTURES and COMPUTER DEATH

Bonjour everyone and welcome!

Did you know I love pictures? Well, I do. I love taking pictures and I love sharing them. I love color pictures, and I love black and white pictures. I love pictures in frames, in blogs, and in books (the more the better). I love thought-provoking pictures, and I love pictures I can rub my crayons all over. In short, a picture really is worth a thousand words (can my next ms be just pictures?) and to prove my point, below is a picture I took a couple weeks ago......

And a few days ago, I took this beauty....

What exactly do you mean metal box when you say,
"Your computer was unable to start."

Just look at these pictures, they hold so much emotion, frustration, and betrayal. We see the battle between man woman and machine. There are lives and files at stake... These images personify the dying of the light and the motherboard. It is death and rebirth and then death again. It is a portrait as I curse, cry, yell, and curse some more. In these pictures I see a desperate soul trying to reformat (twice) a piece of crap computer. Ultimately, it was all for nothing.

NOTHING I TELL YOU!

The metal box died five days ago.

This is my first post from my new computer which runs on Windows 8 (which sucks, seriously what is so complicated about opening docx files? Windows 7 can do it!) . Looking back, I should have thrown the metal box of cookies and crippled rams over a bridge, at least it would have been therapeutic. But enough about me and my pictures, you should see the pictures in Mark's book REVIVAL!
(I'm a black belt in transitioning can't you tell?)

But seriously, I'm excited to be part of Mark's blog tour for REVIVAL and today he's going to talk about the many pictures that were included in the memoir and how they were chosen. So check it out, and don't forget to sign up for the rafflecopter at the end to win a bunch of prizes!

                                         Take it away, Mark! ----->>>>>

Aloha,

Nearing the middle of the Tour for my new book,
REVIVAL – The Donald Braswell Story, we find ourselves in France where Elise is so kind to let me parlais about pictures in a memoir—and how do you choose a final set?

When I first suggested to Donald that adding pictures to the memoir would bring so much more to the story, he was immediately on board, but he soon emailed me with the same question: How do I choose?

I checked my battered copy of What To Expect When You is Memoir-ing, but when that offered little (except to get enough sleep before launch day), I asked Donald to send fifty pics that basically covered the timeframe of the memoir (early ‘20s to late ‘40s.)

I went through the multitude of emails, and because of age and technology (anyone remember how a scanned 4x6 Kodak can appear?) it wasn’t hard to whittle the first round down to a final selection.

Donald sent rough cutlines for each “finalist,” and now REVIVAL ended up with about thirty pictures sprinkled throughout its 236 pages (thanks to our publisher,
Pen-L Publishing.)

(When I read a section, and then saw the corresponding picture, it really drove home how a picture really does tell a thousand words. Just as well… with thirty pictures, gosh, I’d still be writing :)

Has a picture ever helped or hindered your writing?

###

Merci buckets, Elise. You rock, as does the Eifel Tower at night.
I’m stopping by MJ Fifield on Friday, and she’s curious about the challenges involved in memoir writing.

Elizabeth Seckman, France, and Fate Intended

Hi there! I'm here with the fabulous Elizabeth Seckman. She's published several books and is an all around wonderful person, I'm thrilled to have her stop by my humble blog. Today, we're gonna talk about the French and the love shared between siblings, as well as Elizabeth’s new book, Fate Intended.

****

Hello Elise!

Bonjour Elizabeth!

Long ago, you posted a get-to-know-Elise video (it was marvelous, by the way). In that video, you said some French people wonder...does America really hate France?

Yes, I remember that video. I still live in France and I've gotten that question a few times, especially during the time right after 911.

Lafayette at the Battle of Yorktown
Wow. What a sad question.

It really is, Elizabeth.

If America ever had a solid friend, it's France.

I will venture to say, there would be no United States of America without France.

It was the French who had our back in the Revolutionary War against the British crown.

Without French gold, blood, and brains...the American Revolution might have gone down in history as a failed revolt.

I agree, Elizabeth--Vive la France! :)

So much gold was spent, the French government was deep in dept.

There were more French soldiers at the Battle of Yorktown (1781) than American. And that battle was a turning point in the war and it turned the war in our favor, thanks to the leadership of the Marquis deLayette (a French dude...can't you tell by the name?)

Yep, and one of his most famous quotes was: "Humanity has won its battle. Liberty now has a country."

Thank you France!

Our victory against England was signed, sealed, and a new country was delivered by the Treaty of Paris.

France even gave us our symbol of freedom. Yes, Lady Liberty welcomes her huddled masses with a smile and, “Bonjour!”

Bonjour!

So, see? France is like our big brother. And granted, sometimes big brothers and little brothers fuss, but behind every noogie and wedgie...there is real love.

I can't agree with you more, Elizabeth. France and the US are the best of siblings. And speaking of siblings, in your latest book Fate Intended, a hansome devil named Trip also happens to have siblings as well! Can you tell us a bit more about the story?  :)

Fate Intended is the third book in the Coulter Men Series.  Trip is the last of the Coulter sons to find love. He’s a handsome man with all the skills a young spy needs to succeed. But when it comes to love, he misses the target. Jane is a sweet beauty who may or may not be wanted for murder. She’s hiding out as a cleaning lady when chance brings her and Trip together. It looks like a happily ever after is in the cross hairs until reality tries to destroy what fate has intended.

Elizabeth Seckman is a simple chick with a simple dream…to write stories people want to read.

An Excerpt of MOONLESS

Alexia must choose safety and an arranged marriage, or true love and being hunted by the Soulless every moonless night.

Hi Everyone! I'm excited to be part of Crystal's blog tour for her book Moonless. I've really enjoyed the excerpts that have been popping up during the tour. Today, I get to share with you another great little excerpt so check it out and collect an additional hidden word while you're at it. Oh, and don't forget to enter her giveaway at the bottom!  (:

MOONLESS by Crystal Collier

Alexia’s nightmares become reality: a dead baron, red-eyed wraiths, and forbidden love with a man hunted by these creatures. After an attack close to home, Alexia realizes she cannot keep one foot in her old life and one in this new world. To protect her family she must either be sold into a loveless marriage, or escape with her beloved and risk becoming one of the Soulless.

Unravel the mystery of the Moonless night! Hidden in each of the 8 blog tour excerpts is a single word. Gather all 8 and figure out the sentence to win a free copy of Moonless. Send your mystery sentence to crystal (AT) crystal-collier.com with the subject MYSTERY SENTENCE before December 10, 2013, and you will be entered to win one of 10 copies of MOONLESS—just in time for Christmas. Happy hunting!

Kiren unlatched the balcony door with a thin metal hook and slipped inside. He refastened the catch, gut twisting at the moonless sky beyond the glass. How long would his luck hold?
Alexia lay on her back, one arm lost in her mass of dark hair, the other tucked across her chest. A foot dangled off the edge of the mattress, tempting him to slip it back beneath her blanket.
He grinned, envying her carefree abandon. Her latest read lay on the bed beside an extinguished candle. He lifted it. Fanciful words danced back at him. They too made him smile. She wanted adventure. He could supply that.
His eyes landed on the card he’d given her father and his smirk died. It had been shredded and reconstructed. His chest tightened. “Oh Alexia . . .”

Author Bio:

Crystal, author of MOONLESS, is a former composer/writer for Black Diamond Productions. About the Author

This is awesome in a fedora. (:

Growing up in small-town Oklahoma, there were limits on the amount and types of entertainment at my disposal. Perhaps that’s why I set my imagination free. After collecting degrees in psychology and counseling, life brought me to Missouri, Texas, and Northern California—where I currently read, write, and live. I fill my spare time playing video games, watching movies, planning for the zombie apocalypse, reading graphic novels, and playing with my dogs.

My passion for New Adult literature led me to producing the weekly New Adult Lit Chat on Twitter, and contributing to the NA Alley Blog. I’m also the author of the Moonsongs Books, a series of New Adult, speculative-rural fantasy novelettes.

Be sure to add Dragon's Game to your Goodreads shelf.

And for a limited time, you can catch up on the entire Moonsongs series for just .99 cents (regularly $2.99). Moonsongs Anthology 1 (books 1, 2, & 3) is on sale October 15th - 20th at Amazon and Barnes & Noble!

The Sound of Awesome: D S Taylor's Book about a Girl, an Egyptian Prince, and The Shepherd King

I've got a special treat for you today, my best kept secret--David S. Taylor who blogs over at DS Taylor. I've been following David for a while and he's a great guy. I love his posts and sarcastic humor, especially on writing, twitter, blogging and anything in between. Plus, he's a Sansa Stark fan--what's not to like about this guy?!

But the real reason I've managed to get his elusive internet-self over here, is so we can talk about his new release, SHIRI.

David describes his book as historical fiction verging on fantasy because as he puts it, "I don't let history get in the way of a good story!"

I told you he was awesome!

Here's the book's blurb to wet your appetite and get you in the mood while I run out for a quick wardrobe change . . . (;
Shiri blocks her ears to her mother’s screams, sees the arrows strike her father’s chest. With their murderers bearing down on her she turns to obey his final command. “RUN!”

Amenhotep, Prince of Egypt burns her village, enslaves her people, and destroys all she loves. Only Shiri escapes. With tears in her eyes and vengeance in her heart, she races to warn the Shepherd King. If she doesn't reach him in time, all Palestine will burn.

It’s a race that takes her from the fields of Armageddon, to the sands of Ancient Egypt and the very heart of Pharaoh’s court. It’s a struggle that brings the deaths of kings and the birth of a god. It’s a quest that sees her fall in love.

But in a world of masters and slaves can such love really survive? The man she loves is known to all others as Yuya. He is the mysterious new governor of a powerful Egyptian city, and high priest of ‘The Jealous God.’ He is determined to set her people free. Only Shiri knows his true identity and must protect it at all costs, for he is Josef, son of the Shepherd King, and without him, all is lost.

Ok, I'm back.
Doesn't Shiri sound fantastic!
And don't I look better in this Egyptian inspired costume dress?
Eat your heart out Elizabeth Taylor.

Did you know it took me 14 hours to make this costume. Granted, most of that time was spent chasing the dung beetle, but doesn't it look great? David, you should redo your book cover and put me on it. I'm sure you'll sell at least a million more copies if you do. :P

When I read the blurb I was hooked, and wondered what inspired the book, and how David came up with the story line. So I asked. Take it away, David!

Well it’s kind of weird and a long story really – but you asked for it!

During my archaeology degree I became a bit obsessed with a guy called Akhenaten. If you haven’t heard of him he’s King Tut’s father and in Egyptology circles is known as ‘The Heretic’ (mainly due to him being the first person in history to come up with some wacky notion about there only being one god).

Towards the end of my degree it was suggested that I’d be able to lord it over lesser mortals if stayed on in college and got a Ph.D . . . unfortunately to do so I had to write a thesis. The standard topics were ringforts, megaliths and basically anything in Ireland not built by those pesky English. Being about as interested in the suggest topics as I am in the latest Enda Kenny monologue on the progression of the fiscal stimulus package (oh and for the less educated amongst ye Enda Kenny is our esteemed leader) I decided to try to write it on Akhenaten instead.

Thing is, once I started writing it, for some reason it started coming out as a story instead of a thesis, so soon enough I gave up on the whole Ph.D idea and decided I’d lord it over lesser mortals by writing a novel instead. That’s when the kinda weird thing happened. I had this one character in the developing masterpiece . . . an old slave, a woman . . . Shiri. And I just sort of got attached to her and ended up wanting to write her story.

So that’s what I did. I went back in time from Akhenaten to when Shiri was a child back in Palestine. And her story just sort of poured out . . .

That is really cool. Thanks for sharing that with us, David!
So if you haven't already, please go visit David, you can find him on:

IWSG And Salted With Fire Book Tour

I'm still on a semi-blogging hiatus for the month of August. However, I do have a couple things to share today for IWSG and for Nancy LaRonda Johnson's new book coming out, Salted With Fire.

*****

I've been in the throes of rewriting my ms . . .

LIES! NOTHING BUT LIES!

What? Who the hell let you out?

Your mind, remember?

Treasonous bastard. Fine. You're right. I haven't had a whole lot of time to work on my wip. But time (or lack there of) isn't my biggest problem right now--it's change. We know that like a ripple effect, little changes in the beginning of a story can have big concequences by the end. In short, I'm afraid I'm making things worse with my rewrites and turning my ms into an even bigger pile of poo. At least I know what the cover is going to look like. :P However, I feel the changes are necessary, I'm just unsure about the execution. So what can I do? Keep writing I guess.

That's it for me, thanks for stopping in. I'm gonna do my best to visit folks today but before you go, check out Nancy LaRonda Johnson new book that's coming out. :)

Salted With Fire Blog Tour

Nancy LaRonda Johnson is a talented writer. I read her first published book, Anticipation of the Penitent, and you can find my review of it HERE. So it's with great pleasure, I share with you her second publication, Salted With Fire. And don't forget to check out her giveaway at the bottom of the post. (:

About the book - Salted With Fire

Black magic, murder, insanity… humor, honor and devotion. Salted With Fire is a journey of flash fiction and poetry that shows my writing transformation from worldly to wanting to please God.

Flash fiction is my passion; poetry is my release. I love creating a complete story, with a beginning, middle and end, with twists, drama, compassion and horror, all under 1000 words. Salted With Fire isn’t just a book of stories and poetry, it is my journey as a writer, from writing only for the mere joy of it regardless of the message, to writing stories that highlight God’s will for people, even if the stories are not religious in nature.

Inside are fifteen flash fiction pieces and twelve poems with full-color pictures, and short Biblical discussions after each story.
